Shein may have the fast-fashion market cornered, but a growing number of its customers are calling for increased accountability from the company as indie designers continue to accuse it of ripping off their work.

Shein, the Chinese fashion company known for its rock-bottom prices, has hired a former Bear Stearns investment banker Donald Tang as executive vice chairman as part of its push for an international stock market listing.

The former banker and entertainment exec built a career helping bridge the gap between China and the United States but could face his biggest challenge yet with Shein. The online fashion retailer soared to a reported $100 billion valuation earlier this year but risks being caught in tensions between Beijing and Washington, and faces scrutiny over claims of design theft, labor violations and the environmental impact of its trendy but low cost garments.

Shein has become a major rival to fast-fashion giants Inditex and H&M thanks not only to those videos but a data-led business model. The company pushes thousands of new designs a week based on small batch orders with only the most popular lines being moved into large-scale production. Consumer cues from its app and social media are harvested to help shape ordering and new clothing design.

Shein is a B2C fast fashion company owned by Nanjing Lingtian Information Technology Co. founded in 2008. The company was created by Chris Xu and is headquartered in China. It focuses on both men's and women's wear. Clothes for children, accessories, bags, and shoes are some other categories of apparel that Shein houses.

The background of Shein is quite interesting, the idea of the company first popped into the mind of Chris Xu when he learned of the commercial value of Chinese products on the international markets. Xu was then working with Nanjing Aodao Information Technology Co., but he soon left the company with the aim to establish an online retail store for cheap fashion wear.

Shein grew from a company that was valued at $15 billion to one that is valued at $30 billion, as per the reports in November 2021. The company made a whopping $10 billion during the coronavirus pandemic onslaught that nearly drowned a majority of the businesses. Shein has recorded 100% growth in its sales for 7 successive years in 2020. Shein was hailed as the largest online-only fashion firm in the world in 2020.

As you can probably tell, my honest review is not positive. I do not love Shein, in fact I hate this company with a firey passion and actively discourage friends and followers from supporting this literal trash fast-fashion company.

Controversial Chinese fast fashion company Shein was valued at $100 billion following a recent funding round, which makes the online retailer worth more than H&M and Zara combined, the Wall Street Journal reported.

WHITESTOWN, Ind., Sept. 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- SHEIN, a global online retailer of fashion, beauty and lifestyle products, today announced the results of a study conducted by Kyle Anderson, Ph.D., an economist at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, of the impact of the company's new warehouse in Whitestown, Indiana on the economy of Boone County, Indiana, as well as surrounding counties. Findings state that the facility will generate $175 million per year to the local Whitestown, Indianapolis-area economy, once fully operational, and will include the creation of more than 1,000 jobs by the end of 2022 and more than 1,400 by the end of 2025.

Even if Shein does not have specific metrics to effectively report its efforts towards sustainability at the moment, Euromonitor International predicts that its share of the apparel and footwear market in the US will continue to grow in 2022 and beyond. First of all, the demand for its fashionable affordable clothing is still going strong among young Americans, and secondly, the Chinese company appears to be taking steps to improve its brand image which will be necessary to earn long-term growth, and appeal to a wider range of consumers.

Taking for granted that fast fashion will always exist as an industry due to demand for cheap items, what are the indicators of sustainable growth in a business sense for a company within that niche?

While the company started with humble beginnings in 2012, it is now considered the largest online-only fashion company in the world, having earned an estimated $10 billion in revenue in 2020.

But the company is accused by many independent fashion makers of directly copying their designs and selling far cheaper. Among those who have experienced this is Fern Davey, a designer from Bournemouth who founded her Veronica Velveteen brand in 2018, makong high-quality lingerie by hand with existing fabric.

Dominique Muller, policy lead for the ethical-fashion campaign group Labour Behind the Label, tells i: Shein has so far only produced the filmiest of due-diligence statements and its code of conduct only scratches the surface of what is needed to be a responsible company.

China-based fast-fashion company Shein is the most downloaded shopping app in the United States, so it is no surprise that it is expanding its network of distribution centers in the Midwest, California and the Northeast.

The company's expansion comes as some analysts predict an oncoming shift in consumer preferences that moves away from fast-fashion, which is often associated with questionable labor practices and contributing to the incredible amount of textiles heading to landfills.

The company also plans to shift "to more sustainable materials, like recycled polyester," and is using them "more" in its products. As part of its sustainability efforts, Shein announces that it has joined the CanopyStyle initiative and launched the EPR Fund to address the fashion industry's waste problem. It also supports the Or Foundation in Ghana, and has established the Shein Cares Fund with a funding of 10 million dollars, to support organizations that foster communities and help protect the environment. In April, it launched a new, and more sustainable, line called EvoluShein.

This new fashion line includes items made from 50 to 100 percent recycled polyester. "EvoluShein is a (...) collection with inclusive sizes and responsibly sourced materials. With EvoluShein, we support women's empowerment projects around the world. The first collection of Evolu Shein clothing will be made from recycled polyester. Compared to virgin polyester production, the recycled polyester process requires fewer starting materials and significantly reduces the amount of water and energy needed," the company writes.

In 2012, the company first turned to social media influencers and fashion bloggers to promote its products. In 2015, the company name was shortened to Shein, reportedly to be easier to remember and search for online. In 2016, Xu hired 800 designers to design the first lines of Shein-branded clothes.

YesStyle is the sister company of another retail company of YesAsia, which sells Asian entertainment worldwide. In 2006, YesAsia expanded into the field of Asian fashion apparel, in which the products are sourced from Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. 041b061a72
